vRealize Operations Manager provides operations management with great visibility across physical, virtual, and cloud infrastructures. vRealize Operations Manager (vROPS) uses data collected from objects and sources and identifies issues in any monitored system component. It also provides great analytics along with recommended ways to address an issue.
This is a great helpful resource for systems guys and management as it not just monitors, But also analyzes, forecasts capacity planning and gives recommendations and its pro active. vRealize Operations Manager Roles
vRealize Operations Manager 6.7 is installed as an virtual appliance (vApp) based on customized SUSE linux. Each instance can perform following roles in a vROPS cluster.
• Master Node – Mandatory first node in the cluster, or single standalone node in smaller deployments.
• Master Replica Node – This is the replica node for Master Node
• Data Node – Used for scalability.
• Remote Collector Node – Used to overcome data collection issues, used when poor network infra. This node is stateless.
Note: this series we are not covering Replica node installation, however it is straight forward
vROPS Appliance processes:
HTTP Service: This service supports product UI, admin UI, and Suite API.
Collector Process: Collects inventory and Data from configured sources.
Transaction Locator Process: Responsible for coordinating between the master, replica and remote collector nodes.
Transaction Service Process: Does caching, processing, and retrieving metrics for analytics.
Analytics: processing all incoming data by generating SMTP and SNMP alerts on the master and replica nodes.
Common DBs: stores collected data, user content, metric key mappings, and role privileges, manage cluster administration data ,stores all resource, collector, adapter, collector group, and relationships
Resource DB : holds resource, collector, adapter, collector group and relationships
vROPS Cluster Architecture
The recommended architecture for vROPS for enterprises is to have a master node, replica of master for HA and as many data nodes required for redundancy in a vROPS cluster.

Standalone vROPS Installation for Small infra:
One one Master node will be Built. Needs to follow only Part 1 and Part 4 of this series for standalone vROPS implementation.
vRealize Operations Manager 6.7 Sizing Guidelines
This article (https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/54370) will help is selecting the right size for your organization. Like for small deployment need 4 cpu and 16 GB ram to support around 3500 objects.
Pre-requisites for vROPS deployment
- Necessary myvmware login credentials to download the vROPS media ( vRealize-Operations-Manager-Appliance-18.104.22.16883617_OVF10.ova)
- Necessary compute resources for 3 vROPS appliances based on the selected size of appliance.
- 3 Static IP with forward and reverse lookup DNS records created, all IP’s in same subnet.
- Licensing of course is required however vROPS can be licensed post successful deployment.
- (Optional) Load balancer configuration for Master and replica node post implementation for user access.
Accessing vROPS Console
vRealize Operations Manager UI supports product and admin views. Admins and users can use below to connect to vROPS.
Product UI : https://<fqdn or IP of vROPS appliance>
Having Custom dashboard access, super metrics, configuration, and details Used by operations teams.
Admin UI : https://<fqdn or IP of vROPS appliance>/Admin
Used for Administration, Adding Cluster Nodes and Updates
Backup considerations for vROPS appliances
Its recommended to backup the entire cluster of vROPS. Below are some considerations for backup policies.
- Don’t quiesce the file system and back up the entire VM with all the VMDK’s associated with it.
- use fqdn and static IP for all vROPS nodes.
- All nodes must be powered on during backup, Don’t stop the vROPS cluster.
Load Balancer considerations for vROPS
As you are aware by now each vROPS appliance is holding the DB and can act as independently, So its recommended to load balance Master and Replica Node for UI access.
